Scoliosis

Treatment & surgery of 40 Scoliosis children by support of Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute

Urgent treatment & surgery of 34 children who suffers from scoliosis problem (The severe deformity of spine) by the volunteer spine surgery team of Zanjireh Omid Institute in the counterpart hospitals of the Institute from August 1st, 2012 to September 30th, 2012.

Necessity of the Project
The scoliosis disease or deformity of the spine is sometimes very progressive. It causes body deformation in Children who are in their growth age and it also brings about sitting disorders and disability in doing the daily tasks. On the other hand, this severe deformity of spine reduces the capacity of the lungs and weakened the breathing power through putting pressure on the lungs. Some of these patients will gradually die because of the above mentioned effects. Due to the above mentioned effects of scoliosis disease and according to the doctor’s diagnosis, these 34 patients should be operated as soon as possible.

2. Categorizing the patients for different surgeries by doctors:

A.  Patients who need halo traction:
According to the opinion of the doctors, some of these patients because of their severe spine deviation needed to be hospitalized and receive halo traction before surgery for approximately two months. They have been hospitalized in Shari'ati and Sina hospital under the supervision of their doctors for pre-operation halo traction. It should be note that halo traction facilitates surgery of the patients with severe spine deformity and resulted in a better spinal curve correction.

B.    A number of these patients with severe spine deformity were hospitalized at Sina Hospital on the scheduled dates determined by the doctors.
C.  Some of the patients with severe spinal curve which put lots of pressure on their nerve system needed to be operated using the Nerve Monitoring System. This system helps the surgery team to monitor the nerve system during the surgery. These patients were operated   by the international medical team of Zanjireh Omid; Prof. Keyvan Mazda, Dr. Vidal and Dr. Masri Zada and with the cooperation of the Iranian volunteer doctors; Dr. Golbakhsh, Dr. Mehrpour & Dr. Saadat from
09/12/2012 to 13/12/2012 at Sina hospital.

The installation news of the Nerve Monitoring System by Zanjireh Omid at Sina hospital is also attached to this report.

Project Outcomes
These patients had disabilities in doing their daily tasks, they suffered from reduction of the lung capacity and they faced the danger of paralysis and death in some cases. Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute provided the required facilities to operate these children in order to help them have a better future. Some of these patients who had moderate to severe spine deformity, inappropriate lung capacity and the under pressure spinal cord, could not normally been operated   in Iran. The surgery cost of each of these patients outside of the country es8mated to be 2000 Million Rials but by purchasing the Nerve Monitoring System, many of these surgeries took place in Iran and with a very
lower cost.

-   Following are the provided facilities:
1.  Purchasing the Nerve Monitoring System from Nihon Kohden Japan: This 16 channel system is purchased by Zanjireh Omid Institute to be used for monitoring the nerve system of all scoliosis patients during the spine surgery for the first time in Iran.

Monitoring the nerve system during the spine surgery has always been one of the main preoccupations in these surgeries. During the scoliosis corrective surgery, damage of the spinal cord is probable and this is the main anxiety of the surgery team which could undermine the outcomes of a surgery.  The spine surgeries all over the world are performed using a system which enables the surgeon to monitor the function of the spinal cord during the surgery. Any additional pressure on spinal cord or starting of damage is visible on this system. By purchasing this system and providing the required trainings for the Iranian doctors, there is no need to dispatch the patients for treatment
to a foreign country

2.  The Iranian doctors will be trained by Dr. Masri Zada (a famous neurologist who has had 20 years of experience working with Nerve Monitoring System) through short-term training courses in France. With the coordination of the orthopedic team of Sina hospital, a physician will be dispatched to be trained in France. We hope that this method will become widespread in Iran for the corrective spine surgery.
3.  These surgeries have been performed by the supervision of Prof. Mazda and the support and cooperation of Dr. Sadat (head of the orthopedic department at Sina hospital) and   the   Iranian   orthopedic   specialists   Dr.  Golbakhsh, Safaee   & Mehrpour in pre and post operation care.
