Treatment and Surgery of the Scoliosis Patients

Treatment and surgery of scoliosis patients under support of Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute with Nerve Monitoring System for the first time in Iran.

The patients had disabilities in doing their daily tasks, they suffered from reduction of the lung capacity and they faced the danger of paralysis and death in some cases. Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute provided the required facilities to operate these children to help them have a better future. Some of these patients who had moderate to severe spine deformity, inappropriate lung capacity and the under pressure spinal cord, could not be operated in Iran. The surgery cost of these patients outside of the country estimated to be 59,000 US $ each that by purchasing the Nerve Monitoring System, many of these surgeries could be done in Iran at very lower cost.

Another objective of buying this device is to train the Iranian doctors how to use it in order to operate these patients in Iran. The Iranian doctors will be trained by Dr. Masri Zada (a famous neurologist who has had 20 years of experience working with Nerve Monitoring System in France).

Reduction of Mortality Rate among Newborns with Cardiac Problems (Newborn Cardiac NICU Center)

Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute aims to provide the best treatment services at lowest costs based on international standards and provides valuable services in the past 9 years in treatment and training in specialized field of pediatric cardiac, orthopedics and plastic surgery. In addition to treatment of 6500 underprivileged children in the above mentioned fields the institute also carries out the required projects to update therapeutic services based on the international services. To achieve this objective and with analysis of the Institute’s scientific board on newborns mortality before and after cardiac surgery and its status in comparison with standards of advanced countries, the Institute decided to implement the project of “"reduction of neonatal mortality after cardiac surgeries"”. Zanjireh Omid Institute has started the unofficial reception of patients in this project since February 2015 and based on the statistics during this short time the children mortality has reduced from 23% to 7%.

Since Children Medical Center is the only specialized infant cardiac center as part of a children hospital and most of top cardiac specialist who work with the institute also work in this center, the Institute signed an agreement in February 2015 with the center and initiated the project of reducing infant mortality rate after cardiac surgery in a place provided by the hospital. This project includes two sections:

1          Supplying 15 ICU beds to reduce number patients on the waiting list and consequently reducing the mortality rate.

It should be mentioned that according to statistics, 13 thousands newborns with congenital cardiac disease are born every year. This is a considerable figure and justifies the efforts to reduce mortality in children with congenital cardiac problems through these projects. Some of Zanjireh Omid’s activities in this project are as follows:

  • Demolition, renovation and repair of ICU Equipping the cardiac ICU
  • Demolition and renovation of Central Compressed Air System
  • Equipment of cardiac operation room
  • Equipment of Cardiac ICU

Holding training programs for operation room personnel such as nurses and doctors including: paying the overtime of personnel, Dispatching surgeons, general practitioners and nurses to pass observer courses, providing the overtime wages of 40 nurses and 20 operation room personnel by Zanjireh Omid Institute for 5 years.

Transplant surgery of the hand muscle and toe to thumb

This type of surgery is one the subspecialized surgeries which have been performed by hand surgery team of Zanjireh Omid on children with upper limb malformations.

This surgery is performed on patients with congenital upper limb disorders and incomplete formation of hand finger   and in cases which the hand fingers are fully damaged. During this microscopic surgery, toe is completely transplanted to thumb with all its tendons, artery, vein and nerve using microscopic magnification. If this complicated organ transplant surgery is successful, the patient could grab objects with its transplanted finger. Zanjireh Omid’s hand surgery team has performed several successful toes to thumb transplant until now.

Referral and treatment of children and newborns affected by Brachial Plexus Birth Palsy

International statistics shows that three out of every two thousand newborns, can have brachial plexus birth palsy caused by a damage during natural childbirth or caesarean. This can cause paralysis of the arm also known as Erb's palsy. This damage can emerge either at birth or with delay.

In most of the cases, newborns with brachial plexus birth damage get better automatically in the first year of their life. According to studies, there is a possibility of permanent symptoms in 10 to 25 percent of newborns.

Thanks to the recent medical progress, it is possible to treat these injured kids; but because of a lack of specialized medical education and the absence of specific medical equipment needed for the treatment of these kids, the definite treatment could not be provided for them. On time diagnosis and treatment of this damage can highly affect the long-term recovery of patient.

Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute with its skilled and specialized team holds monthly clinics to diagnose and treat the patients and have achieved the medical and therapeutic objectives of this project. The required equipment for the surgery of brachial plexus damage such as the special biological paste to connecting the nerves, microscopic surgery set and other equipment have been provided by Zanjireh Omid.

Establishment and equipment of Zanjireh Omid Children House project: 200 receptions per month

One of the other achievements of Zanjireh Omid Charity Institute is establishment and equipment of children's house including physiotherapy clinic with pediatric protocol and a clinic for cleft palate project. Accommodation, special treatment for Iranian and refugee patients under support of Zanjireh Omid Institute (those who are living far from Tehran and could not receive standard treatments at their home), pre and post-op services for children, pediatric physiotherapy services and rehabilitation under supervision of institute’s doctors and dentistry clinic for cleft palate project are among Institute’s objectives in establishment of this center.

Since supported patients of the institute are from underprivileged classes of society and many of them come from other provinces to Tehran for treatment, establishment of this center would have the following social advantages:

  1. Reduction of hospitalization costs by reducing term of hospitalization.
  2. Many patients leave Tehran and return to their cities due to high cost of hospitalization, while the treatment protocol is not completed. Therefore, the center solves this problem by providing accommodation for these families.
  3. Provision of a safe environment for the patients.
  4. Providing educational facilities for elementary children so that they can catch up with their classmates.
  5. The parents also receive short term training courses such as: life skill, social damages, and methods of taking care of children after surgery.
This center includes three sections of accommodation, medical center and administrative unit.
